Text: Hailstones and Halibut Bones by Mary O'Neill
Purpose: Great for teaching poems about colors that invokes all of the senses. Uses similes and metaphors to compare colors to other common things that we know.
Purpose: The first page is a great example of all of the elements needed to start a story including dialogue examples and interesting word choice. In addition, most students have been introduced to this book by third grade so they have some familiarity with it.
Purpose: Great for Word choice and great for a good beginning to a story. Furthermore, you could use the book to teach about patterned beginning and ending. Lastly, it is an example of how a character and her personality is introduced early on in the book. I loved this book!
